The flavorful combination of Frito chips, taco seasoning, enchilada sauce, cheese, black beans, and your other favorite taco toppings blend together into a Frito casserole that the whole family will enjoy.
Not only is this recipe a perfect option for Taco Tuesday, but Frito pie is great for game day and a family main dish meal that doesn’t require much work!
What is Frito pie?
Frito pie is also known as Frito taco pie which is a casserole dish that’s traditionally served in the Southwestern and Midwestern United States.
Frito pie toppings will vary from recipe to recipe, but traditionally includes your favorite taco toppings such as salsa, shredded cheese, chili, beef, onions, jalapenos, and sour cream.
This frito casserole is gaining traction all over the United States as a flavorful taco option to serve on taco Tuesday night.
Is Frito Pie a southern thing?
Frito pie has traditionally been a southwestern and Midwestern thing with the most popular locations to find a frito pie include sporting events and similar venues. In southern California, they refer to frito pie as pepper bellies, but they’re made similarly to my Frito pie recipe below.
Is this recipe a Texas thing?
Frito pie is popular in Texas but you’ll usually find a more simple version of this Frito pie recipe in Texas.
The Frito chips are laid on a plate, topped with chili, and topped with shredded cheddar cheese with raw onion slices.
This is a slightly different variation to my Frito casserole for game day featured below, but it’s just as flavorful if you want a simpler version to try the Texas style Frito pie.
What should you serve with Frito Pie?
There are many options that families choose to serve with Frito pie, if you’re not using this for a game night appetizer, rather a family meal then you’ll want to serve something with your Frito casserole.
Some options that pair well with this recipe included; a side of homemade guacamole, sour cream, Greek yogurt or perhaps add something extra into your Frito casserole such as other flavors of shredded cheese.
A side dish that works well with Frito pie is black bean salad, a traditional garden salad, or carrot and celery sticks with a favorite dip. Since this Frito pie recipe is already full of veggies and meat, you won’t have to serve a side with Frito pie, if you don’t want to.
How to Make Frito Casserole
Ingredients:
- ground beef
- small onion, white or yellow
- taco seasoning
- water
- black beans, drained and rinsed
- enchilada sauce
- Frito corn chips
- Mexican style shredded cheese
Toppings:
- Green onions, sliced
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
- Salsa
- Jalapenos
- Black Olives
- Any taco toppings you like
Frito Pie
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion white or yellow, chopped finely
- 1 package or 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- ½ cup water
- 1 can 15 oz black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 can 19 oz enchilada sauce
- 1 bag 9.25 oz Frito corn chips
- 2 cups Mexican style shredded cheese
- Toppings
- Green onions sliced
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
- Salsa
- Jalapenos
- Black Olives
- Any taco toppings you like
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
- Spray 13×9 baking dish with cooking spray
- In a large skillet, brown ground beef until almost done
- Add onions cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes and beef is no longer pink
- Stir in taco seasoning and water, heat to boiling
- Reduce heat and stir in beans and enchilada sauce
- Cook 2-3 minutes or until heated through and mixture is slightly thickened
- Add about 3 ½ cups of corn chips to the bottom of the prepared baking dish
- Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheese
- Top with beef mixture
- Sprinkle remaining cheese
- Bake uncovered for 18-20 minutes or until cheese is melted and casserole is bubbly around the edges
- Remove from oven and top with remaining corn chips and toppings of your choice
- Serve immediately
- Store leftovers in refrigerator
